The DDJ-ERGO-V is the perfect partner for Serato DJ Intro; its layout mirrors the software’s graphical user interface (GUI) and all of its major features are available via dedicated controls. We imagine it to be Traktor and Virtual DJ certified, in fact if you look very closely at the picture it clearly says “Traktor” at the top and on the other side you can see a “3″ so we can only assume it will be called the MC3000 although Denon continue to remain tight-lipped about what it is.

What we can say though is that we will have this controller, whatever it is, whatever it’s called, at our next ShowNight in November when we showcase quite possibly the largest selection of current software controllers ever known. HOW CAN THAT BE?

The Auckland-based company have made a wise move and have made their software technology available to the masses.  Up until now if you wanted to use Scratch Live you had to buy a supported product from Rane such as the SL-1 USB box.  Likewise with Itch you would’ve had to have bought a supported hardware controller such as the Pioneer DDJ-S1 or VCI-300.

DJ-Intro is basically a software package that is not tied down to a particular piece of hardware or a controller.  Serato are remaining tight-lipped about exactly which controllers will work with DJ-Intro but we do know at this stage it will work with these…

Nobody wants a deaf DJ – by Ian Barber

It’s time to look after our hearing, or lose one of the best jobs in the world. We both hear and feel the music that we play night after night and feel that we have done a really good job at the end of the show. Very few if any of us use a sound pressure level meter to check sound levels throughout the gig. Ok so we might do at the start during the ‘background music’ phase and maybe once when the party really starts to get going. There is no time after that to think about sound meters as we keep the crowd moving to the music all night long after all that’s what we are there for, as entertainers not sound engineers.

The problem is always one of excessive level, urged on by the crowd for more bass out of those massive bins that we bought last week to ‘fill the room’. The 600’s were good, but you want to use the 1200’s now that you have spent the cash and they need to be ‘run-in’ don’t they ? Absolutely nothing wrong in that and I wish they were mine! The requests come in for more and more heavy bass beat tracks, and the volume goes up, and up as does the EQ. But the crowd are loving it, so who cares ? Now comes the difficult bit, as the crowd tires you change the music type for a couple of tracks and then maybe again until the floor is full once more. So on it goes for a couple of hours playing many different styles of music and everyone is loving it. But what about the volume?! Oh, it just does not seem to be so loud now that everyone has got used to it, and the head-bangers with their ears next to the speakers also have not noticed. Lets just give it a little bit more volume on the fader so we can restore the loudness back to what it was earlier…

So the distortion is now very apparent as the amp(s) decide to start clipping in protest. Nobody on the dance floor notices as they are having a good time, but we do notice and don’t react as we don’t want to risk upsetting the dancers who might sit down if we interfere. BIG MISTAKE. The dancers won’t notice if we lower the level ever so gradually to a point where the clipping has disappeared and then a little more, gradually. Amazing, the music sounds better and has now come back to what it sounded like when we first turned it up a couple of hours ago.

The above is a typical gig which we all do, or have done many times before and will, no doubt, continue to do for ever and ever. Its incredibly easy getting used to a volume level in a crowded room full of people making a lot of noise, that is going to damage our hearing in the long term, if not also the short. We all do it over and over again each gig and our ears are not designed to take it.

SEDA is determined to give our members the information about hearing loss that we need and provide a long term future for ourselves. In the meantime we can try keeping the volume at a reasonable undistorted level, use noise-cancelling headphones and wear ear plugs with a 10-12db attenuation as much as possible during the gigs. However, the idea is to get the volume entering the ears at an overall continuous level back into the ‘safe zone’ of between 85-87db using earplugs which is deemed safe for continuous use. That means the volume at the DJ’s monitoring position (deck-stand if you like) must not be any more than 95-97db in this case.

The above assumes that you have an accurate sound level meter, or use of a sound measuring app on your mobile phone. Obviously, the further you are away from the speakers, the less volume entering the ears. I know it looks all neat and tidy to have the speakers right next to the deckstand, and in tight venues that is the only option, but this dramatically increases the sound pressure levels entering the ears. Its far better, space permitting, to have them 2 or 3m away from the monitoring position facing the dancefloor. I have, on occasion found that, for me, the optimum speaker position is to have them all on one side of the dance floor firing across the monitoring position. This really cuts down the volume at the DJ’s deckstand or booth and has the added advantage of the DJ hearing exactly what the dancefloor are hearing. Another advantage is that the punters who like to have their heads between or right next to the speakers will move away from the DJ position, making it less likely that they will try and use your deck-stand as a handy drinks holder!

If all of this fails, for whatever reason, and you are left with little or no hearing after a gig, as unfortunately happened to a SEDA member recently, then a specialist hearing test will be required. This assumes that the hearing has not returned fully after, say, 4-8 weeks from the exposure. Musicians Union members are able to have a ‘hearing passport’ set-up for them by one of the MU’s preferred hearing specialists after an initial hearing test. The purpose of this passport is to monitor your hearing on a regular (yearly) basis, logging any changes from the initial first hearing test over a period of time. You can set one up yourself too by having regular yearly hearing tests and logging the results on-line, or in hard copy.

Remember, once the damage is done to your hearing, it is not reversible. The frequencies that are lost first are in the 4-8khz bracket, though all frequencies are affected to a lesser extent over time.

Sudden loss of hearing is not usually caused by excessive sound levels. Gradual loss of hearing is usually the result of too much sound exposure, whereas sudden loss of sound in one or both ears at the same time is usually caused by something else. Common causes of sudden loss of sound are a build-up of wax in the ear canal, or the onset of a virus. The ear wax can be syringed-out by your local GP surgery or a DIY method is to use a little olive oil in the ear canal to soften the wax and let it come out naturally. Never use anything smaller than your elbow to dig out wax from the ear, please (in other words DO NOT DO IT). Unfortunately, after diagnosis by your GP, if it is caused by a virus etc, then it can take weeks to return to normal as this happened to a relation of mine last year. My relation was out of action from his live band for 8.5 weeks following a severe virus where his hearing went suddenly, almost completely. He followed his GP’s advice and had to wait for his hearing to return, which it did.

Unless you are a mid-shipman serving as a gunnery officer or ‘powder-monkey’ etc. on a ‘ship of the line’, you are unlikely as a DJ to experience bleeding of the ears as a result of a very loud gig. However, should you experience any ear pain during a gig, then you need to dramatically lessen the volume immediately to save your ears from permanent damage. The ‘live music’ boys all wear sound exposure monitoring devices for working on or around live stages to record the build-up. When the monitoring devices say they have reached the maximum exposure level, they are removed from their duties and given other work to do elsewhere, away from any further noise exposure. However, DJ’s are mostly self-employed and are, therefore, responsible for their own hearing protection. Sound exposure monitoring devices may not be practical for most DJ situations and, most mobile DJ’s don’t wear any form of hearing protection. Given the above, maybe they should!

Valuable advice i’m sure you will agree there from Ian Barber, we only get one set of ears and the amazing technology within them so it’s really REALLY important we take precautions to protect them.

There are a couple of options open to you, you can go for the full-on, bespoke ear plugs designed for your own ears or you can go for something a little cheaper. Personally, I find the following product is absolutely perfect for the job we do and you’ll easily get change out of a £20 note. I even recommend these to photographers who find them invaluable when they work with DJ’s who sadly take their sound systems to ridiculous volume levels.
